Critical Civitates: A Journal of the People
Dear Friend,
My name is Albert W. Mudwater. I edit Critical Civitates: A Journal for the People.
At CC, we are especially interested in reading about hypocrisy, hegemony, hope, and the possibility of harmony. Perhaps you are Igorot, live in Sagada on Luzon Island in the Philippines and want to write about how global economics has influenced the traditional arts of your people or how your peace community developed from resistance to a hydroelectric dam project. Perhaps you live in St. Louis and want to write about inequality. Maybe you are a nurse who wants to write about work conditions. Maybe you are a free speech expert. Maybe you are involved with Catholic Workers or Plowshares activists. Perhaps you are a community activist in Afghanistan. Perhaps your focus is related to education. Perhaps you have concerns about environmental issues. Maybe issues of race, class, and gender move you to write. Maybe you are a photographer with a social conscience. Maybe you do video work or dance or do theater or poetry or some variety of all those things. We have interest in your topic if you strive for the greater good of all.
Maybe your work and ideas need a safe haven. The editorial staff at CC understands that scholars in America and around the globe risk much for authoring works that displease autocratic administrators from department chairs to deans to vice presidents to governmental officials to rulers. We realize this is an online source, so we can't protect authors from technological monitoring and tracking, but we can offer a place where authors may choose to use pseudonyms and/or submit critical works in which the names of people and places have been changed. We provide a place of relative safety for those who have important things to communicate, but who don't want to be punished, fired, imprisoned, or killed. In fact, you can contact us through third-party agents if necessary. We are a refuge and will support your efforts if the topos is of the heart.
In terms of style, we accept essay, video, poetry, photojournalism, painting (electronic images), theater, and dance works. If we can upload it, we are interested. That noted, we are just starting and are, consequently, focusing on written works and photo imagery. In terms of essays, think op-ed and around 1000-3000 words, though we are not opposed to longer works. We want the writing to be attractive to those who appreciate literary art. The same goes for those submitting in another genre. We are inclusive, so authors should feel free to submit multilingual/multicultural and mixed genre endeavors. We tend toward artsy, but clarity is vital, and good science is always appreciated. We privilege ethos and logos, though pathoi remain vital. Certainly, we support progressive. Bottom line, from the local to global, from macro to micro, we accept quality contributions.
With humility and hope,
AM
